Integrated Management of Production Landscapes to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits - Belize Water Shed

A BLPA Project
In January 2024, the BLPA received funding under the GEF 6 – “Integrated Management of Production Landscapes to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits – Belize Water Shed.” The grant aims to enhance cattle producers’ capabilities in four specific communities within the Belize River Valley Watershed, enabling them to adopt Silvopastoral systems. These systems are designed to increase productivity and enhance resilience against climate change impacts.

The training activities are to enhance knowledge in two critical areas: optimized pasture management via rational grazing and utilization of Silvopastoral systems to elevate productivity, climate resilience, and promotion of environmentally conscious practices.

The first round of trainings carried out to farmers were in:
– Yo Creek, Orange Walk District
– Crooked Tree, Belize District
– Double Head Cabbage, Belize District
– BLPA Grounds, Cayo District

These trainings were held between January 20th, 2024, and February 10th, 2024. Two modules were delivered per group. Module 1 included topics on Pasture Management, Andre Voisin concepts of rational/rotational grazing and pasture evaluation (health, pasture degradation). These concepts helped participants understand the importance on stocking rate and carrying capacity. Model 2 was based on the overall concepts and benefits of Silvopastoral systems and its role in climate change resiliency.
